O’Rourke Taxidermists At Pleasant Point in South Canterbury is a taxidermy business that has been producing top quality trophy mounts for almost 60 years. O’Rourke Taxidermists have followed the founder, Gerald O’Rourke’s vision of offering worldclass taxidermy using the most modern methods and materials. Being keen hunters has enabled the team to have thorough knowledge and an appreciation of how the finished trophy should look and thereby provide the hunter with a life-long memory of his or her hunt. Over the years, many thousands of highly prized hunting trophies have been completed for New Zealand and overseas clients. O’Rourke Taxidermist mounts can be viewed in the Museum of New Zealand, the Auckland Museum, the Canterbury Museum, South Canterbury Museum, Otago Museum and the New Zealand Department of Conservation. O’Rourke Taxidermists is certified and registered with the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries to export to all countries including the European Union. Well worth a visit is PLEASANT POINT just 19kms west of Timaru on SH 8. It is a small country town with a population of under 1300 and is the service centre for the surrounding farming district. One of the main attractions is the Award winning PLEASANT POINT MUSEUM & RAILWAY which has the reputation of being the best of it’s kind of operation in New Zealand. When the Fairlie Branch Railway Line closed in 1968, a group of enthusiasts established the Pleasant Point Railway and Historical Society based on “a vision, a rusty steam locomotive, a vandalized train station and no money!” Te Museum & Railway is run entirely by volunteers and has become one of South Canterbury’s premier attractions. The Museum boasts wonderfully restored STEAM LOCOMOTIVES and the world’s only operational MODEL T FORD RAILCAR. This unique vehicle holds only 11 passengers, looks more like a bus on rail wheels, and was built by the Museum’s volunteers from the NZ Railways original drawings and blueprints. On some weekends and public holidays, the locomotives pull historic carriages

along 2.5kms of track that was once part of the old 35mile branch line to Fairlie. The trains run to Keanes Crossing where there is an old time MOVIE THEATRE, PRINTING ROOM, MODEL RAILWAY, a collection of RAILWAY ROLLING STOCK & much more. Keanes Crossing has a meeting room with kitchen facilities making it ideal for special events and functions including wedding and family photos within the museum environs. Only a few kms away at Waitohi visitors can also visit the Richard Pearse Monument, which marks the spot where he became airborne. There are Maori Rock Art sites nearby, good fishing in local rivers, and the local Golf Course & Camping ground. ACCOMMODATION is located conveniently close to Pleasant Point township and attractions including Serenity Motels, Centre Hill Cottage, Longview B&B, Magnolia Cottage B&B and Pleasant Point Hotel. You will also find friendly people, a taxidermist and great ice creams at Pleasant Point Dairy! So WHY NOT visit PLEASANT POINT – the name says it all!

Butlers Berry Farm & Café For decades the Waimate District has been renowned for its strawberries and celebrates the juicy crop with an annual Strawberry Fare in Waimate and the iconic Butlers Berry Farm and Café. Located just south of Timaru on SH1, a large wagon of huge strawberries is without doubt a “must try” invitation to stop, shop, stay and sample Butlers berries in numerous mouth watering ways. Renowned for their high-quality fruit and produce throughout the district and beyond, you’ll find exceptional coffee and delectable food. The licensed cafe serves a berry-inspired menu, fresh fruit ice creams and smoothies to sigh for! Butlers Café is famous for its Devonshire Teas, with “light as air” scones, real cream and your choice of Butlers jams made with more fruit and less sugar. On a commercial scale, Butlers manufacture a variety of jams and chutneys using their own fruit throughout the year. These are available at the Fruit Stall and can also be tasted in the Café.

You can purchase punnets of strawberries as well as raspberries, gooseberries, blackberries and red or blackcurrants. But you can also pick your own in season and take home magic in a mouthful – sweet, firm and colourful, the way berries should be. Butlers Berry Farm and Café is also a superb venue. For family groups, small events and weddings, up to 50 guests can be catered for in the café and marquee space in the grounds, surrounded by strawberry fields. You can also stay in on site accommodation which comprises 2 two bedroomed cottages (each sleeping 4) plus a backpacker lodge which can accommodate 14 people in total. Enjoy a berry splendid Butler breakfast and then explore the history, walks and cycle trails in the local area. Butlers Berry Farm and Café is open 7 days and owners Jackie and Donald Butler welcome visitors and guests whether it is a quick visit, a day trip or a longer stay. Waimate – A Thriving Rural Town Nestled at the foot of the Hunter Hills, 8km off State Highway 1, Waimate is a thriving rural town providing the visitor with many reasons to stop and explore. Wide spacious streets, a valued collection of Edwardian buildings, historic churches, parks and beautiful gardens, create a relaxed, friendly environment for both residents and visitors who enjoy browsing Waimate’s specialist shops. The town is the heart of a district blessed with rivers and lakes that offer an extensive range of outdoor pursuits such as world renowned salmon and trout fishing, deer hunting, boating, yachting, bird watching and family camping on the lake shores. Outstanding forest, mountain and alpine tracks encourage walking and mountain biking. The newly opened White Horse Big Easy Mountain Bike Trail offers rides to suit all abilities. The Studholme Bush Walkway comprises five individual walks of 20 minutes or a combination of all five tracks over 3 hours. Waimate has not forgotten its heritage and those people and animals that helped mould it. The White Horse Monument is a tribute to Clydesdale horses and the stands majestically on

the Hunters Hills, visible for miles and accessed via the Waimate walkway or by car. The Waimate district is one of the few places in NZ where wallabies have taken up residence. Introduced from Australia, you can see them in wildlife parks, or if hunting is your sport, there is ample opportunity for this too. Waimate is also famous for its strawberries, which have been grown in the region since the late 1880’s. At any of the strawberry fields, growers will sell you a punnet of their finest berries, real berry fruit ice cream or pick your own straight from the field. You can’t get much fresher than that! Tourism contributes to Waimate’s economy with many independent travellers visiting the area to enjoy its attractions and annual events, such as The March Hare Motor Cycle Rally and Strawberry Fare to be held this year on Saturday 9th December. Waimate also offers an alternative route to Queenstown via the spectacular scenery of the Waitaki Lakes. Waimate’s Tame Wallabies

While visiting Waimate, you must visit the town’s famous Tame Wallaby Park Sanctuary. Gwen, the “Wallaby Lady” has dedicated 40 years to hand raising and caring for orphan baby wallabies through to adulthood, mostly brought to her by hunters. This requires much commitment as they need constant warmth and food. Gwen loves them all as much today as she did when she got her first one all those years ago. As visitors meander among the tame wallabies at their own pace, hand feeding them special pellets, they are fascinated by the animals’ gentle nature, thus allowing you hassle-

The Waimate Museum is a complex of several buildings – seven of which are open to visitors. The main building is the magnificent Courthouse built in 1879. Inside, as well as temporary displays, you will find a clock room, military room, telephone display, photographs and much more. Visitors enjoy reliving their schooldays in the Douglas School and our younger visitors especially like to experience being locked in a jail cell in the old lock-

up. The story of how the people of Waihao lived in pre-European times is told through a video and a display of traditionally built shelters in the rammed- earth Lilian Marshall building. This building also houses the comprehensive moa display showcasing moa bones found at the local Kapua swamp. The geology display is also in this building and traces the Earth’s

history through rocks and examples of fossils from different geological eras. More recent human history can be seen in the tiny Bremner’s cottage from the horse drawn vehicles and Bushtown days of the late 1800’s and the recreated street of shops in the Pavilion. The Forrester Gallery The Forrester Gallery, North Otago Museum and Waitaki District Archive are key cultural destinations for the Waitaki District. OAMARU “VISIT THE STEAMPUNK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD”

Steampunk HQ, NZ’s premier Steampunk experience is a museum and workshop situated in the Victorian precinct of Oamaru. It is crazy, quirky and unique; unlike any other visitor attraction in NZ. Steampunk is a fun sub-genre of science fiction that features steam-powered technology, set in an alternate, futuristic version of 19th century Victorian England. Visitors this summer will have the opportunity to be fully immersed in the Steampunk HQ experience by entering the ‘NEW’ Transformatic Booth and reinventing themselves as time travelling airship pirates, adventurers and the like. Outside Steampunk HQ, Engine SP001 greets visitors by belching flames, smoke and eyrie sounds; whilst inside, a museum of two large darkened rooms presents a theme of a dark postapocalyptic vision of a future “as it might have been”. Contraptions and bizarre machinery featuring heavy use of copper, gears, pipes, gas cylinders, as well as an ensemble of skeletal sculptures are lit by flickering lights and accompanied

by film, projection and sounds. Belt out a tune on the Metagalactic Pipe Organ and marvel at Chris Meder’s Recycled Relics sculptures. A back door leads to a large yard with projects and machines in various stages of being steampunked. The Portal is a highlight of any visit to Steampunk HQ. Described as a time travel experience that moves visitors through into another dimension, The Portal is a retro-futuristic mirror and lighting installation that features original glowing light sculptures with a theme of skulls and mythology. Back on the road this summer, our Pedal Punk four wheel cycles are available to hire from outside Steampunk HQ. A wonderful way to experience the shops and galleries of Harbour Street, and the beautiful Oamaru Waterfront home of the Steampunk Playground and Little Blue Penguins. Steampunk HQ must be experienced rather than explained. Plan your visit now!

A Piece of Paradise

OROKONUI ECOSANCTUARY“A future for our past” Just 50m from the beach, Moeraki Village Holiday Park enjoys an idyllic setting close to the famous Moeraki Boulders and colonies of penguins and seals. Hosts Kristina and Robbie Mitchell welcome visitors from all over the world to their “piece of paradise” and provide a variety of accommodation to cater for all budgets. As well as 6 self contained motels, 3 self contained tourist flats, 3 cabins and 30 tent/caravan or motor home sites, visitors will also appreciate modern well equipped communal kitchen and dining facilities, clean shower blocks and guest laundry, a TV lounge with Freeview TV, internet and wireless access, barbeques and children’s play equipment.

Located on a curve of faultless beach, there’s ample opportunity for fishing and boating, deep sea charter fishing, while wonderful walks take you to Moeraki’s unique rock formations and wildlife including New Zealand’s rare Hoiho or yellow-eyed penguin. The area is also historically significant and once boasted a Maori village and pa in addition to the pretty Kotahitanga Church and a lighthouse in continuous use since its establishment in 1878. Visitors to Moeraki can enjoy restaurant meals at the Moeraki Tavern or the award winning world class taste sensation of Fleur’s Place or the services and amenities of Oamaru just 20 minutes drive away.

Fleurs Place Fleurs Place in Moeraki Village has been recognised nationally and internationally for delicious, simply prepared fresh fish and locally sourced produce, served and enjoyed in beautiful surroundings. The cafe bar and restaurant is right on the village’s waterfront, across the bay from the iconic Moeraki Boulders, a stone’s throw from the area’s rare wildlife. After 20 years at Oliver’s fine dining restaurant in Clyde, Fleur Sullivan followed a dream to live by the sea and found herself “surrounded by fish stock, cod livers, mussels, seaweed and boats.” The temptation to establish another restaurant was overwhelming, and the rest, as they say is history. Accolades soon followed from food writer. Dine Out and celebrity chefs, including Rick Stein. This year Cuisine Magazine named Fleur the winner of their 2017 Food Legend award. The food is simply superb and incorporates seasonal delicacies like muttonbird. All the shellfish is harvested commercially from Marlborough to Bluff. The Trio of Fillets, Tasting Plate for Two, or Fish of the Day (which can be baked whole) is straight from the Moeraki fishing boats, selected from the ever-changing daily catch which may consist of; Blue Cod, Moki, Gurnard, Sole, Flounder, Groper and Crayfish, complemented by fresh vegetables form local organic growers. OLVESTON HISTORIC HOME

A ‘must visit’ for lovers of arts and culture; Olveston offers a unique glimpse into the extraordinary lives of one of Dunedin prominent Edwardian families. Olveston was the home of businessman, collector and philanthropist David Theomin. Designed by the English architect, Sir Ernest George, Olveston was built with every modern convenience including central heating, a gas generator for electricity, a shower in each bathroom and heated towel rails, an internal telephone system and service lift. The house was also lavishly furnished with exotic artefacts, prized artworks, antiques, carpets, ceramics, statues and weaponry purchased from around the world. Olveston was inherited by the Theomin’s daughter Dorothy in 1933. Continuing the family tradition of philanthropy, Dorothy supported many of the artistic and community causes championed by her parents including Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the Plunket Society. Following Dorothy’s death in 1966, it was discovered that Olveston, complete with the original contents, was gifted to

the people of Dunedin. Visiting Olveston is by guided tour only; Guided tours reveal the extraordinary lives of the Theomin family and allow a glimpse of Dunedin’s rich business, artistic and social history from the mid1800s until the 1960s. Set within a 1-acre ‘Garden of National Significance’, at 42 Royal Terrace, Olveston is within walking distance from the Octagon. Olveston is a time capsule, as little has changed inside the house since it was occupied as a family home. A feast for the eyes, a tour of Olveston is for those who appreciate (or aspire to) the finer things in life. Visiting Olveston is by guided tour only. Guided tours commence daily at 9.30am, 10.45am, 12noon, 1.30pm, 2.45pm and 4pm. For details of other activities and events held at the house throughout the year, visit www.olveston. co.nz. Car parking is available around Olveston, both all day parking and P90 (90 minutes parking). During the peak season, however, parking can be limited and it may be advisable to walk or take a taxi.

Located in the heart of Dunedin is the only traditional Chinese Scholar’s Garden in the southern hemisphere. The garden takes visitors on a journey through the city’s cultural history, heritage and tradition – giving recognition to the Chinese people who first came to Otago during the 1860s gold rush and stayed to establish some of Dunedin’s businesses. As a Garden of National Significance it has a distinct character being designed and built using authentic Chinese materials and crafted by a team of artisans form Dunedin’s sister city of Shanghai. The Garden features handmade wooden buildings, tiles, bricks, lattice-work and hand-finished granite

paving stones. In a scholar’s garden, galleries connect to pavilions with the central building, usually a library or study and in Dunedin’s case the Tea House, dividing the garden into individual scenes or landscapes. Plants, trees, and rocks are all carefully composed into small perfect landscapes mimicking a traditional Chinese landscape painting. It is a great place to bring children in the school holidays with plenty of activities to keep them entertained including garden hunts, costumes and arts and crafts. Parents can take some time out in the Tea House and enjoy traditional Chinese tea and treats.

Blue Penguins Pukekura Everyone loves penguins! Discover Korora, Little Blue Penguins, the world’s smallest penguins in their natural habitat on the picturesque Otago Peninsula and see them scurry home to their cliff side burrows at the end of the day. A purpose-built observation platform and boardwalk at the beach provide the most natural way to view the little penguins without disturbing them. Blue Penguins Pukekura is operated as a conservation kaitiakitanga partnership between the Royal Albatross Centre, the Otago Peninsula Trust and the Pukekura Trust. Tours begin every evening at dusk from the Royal Albatross Centre and last for approximately 75 minutes. There is a Café and Souvenir Shop on site. Happy Hens have become distinctive Dunedin icons since Yvonne Sutherland made her first appealing designs in 1984 and showcased them internationally at Dunedin’s sister city in Japan. Visitors to the studio at Portobello can see the creative process with the hand painting of each hen. Most of the designs represent different breeds of hens, which are stylized to fit the characteristic Happy Hen shape. Happy Hens are the collectables of today and the antiques of tomorrow. For those passionate about these unique hand made which exude their own personalities there is a Happy Hens Collectors Club. There are many repeat visitors and some families are now third generation collectors. “We even created a special red and black hen following the Christchurch earthquake and many Christchurch residents asked for replacements after their breakages, saying they couldn’t live without their Happy Hens! A variety of Happy Hen products including tableware, kitchen linen and greeting cards are available at the Portobello premises, or alternatively can be purchased online.. Larnach Castle is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s finest historic homes. Not only is it a testament to the wealth of its builder, but to the current owners who have restored and revitalised it for the benefit of visitors from all over the world. William Larnach was a merchant, Baron and politician when he built the castle in 1871 for his wife Eliza. The finest materials were imported to befit the opulent grandeur he envisaged; Italian marble, Venetian glass and tiles from England. The 3000 square foot ballroom is still used for weddings and balls and the castle boasts the only Georgian hanging staircase in the Southern Hemisphere. Part of the romance and intrigue of the castle today is the tragic history of its owner. Larnach shot himself after a scandal involving his wife and the building was subsequently used as a mental hospital and later to billet troops. Years of neglect finally came to an end when the Barker family purchased it in 1967 and painstakingly restored and developed it to its present condition. As well as its magnificent Victorian interior, resplendent with architectural details, elaborate fittings and antique furniture, 35 acres of garden have been re-developed by Margaret Barker into “Garden of International Significance” status. The native plant trail is a beautifully illustrated walk through the castle grounds among rare and iconic native plants in rock gardens, a south seas garden and a rain forest. Children also enjoy a special guide to Larnach Castle. The illustrated brochure contains interesting facts about castles, Victorian times, the family’s history and a children’s tour of the grounds.

Larnach Castle offers guests three different styles of accommodation; Camp Estate - country house accommodation positioned 500 metres from the front gate of the Castle, offering luxurious decor and total privacy; Larnach Lodge, features colonial style in the grounds of the castle and has 12 bedrooms with private facilities for guests; while Castle Stable Stay is the perfect choice for budget conscience travellers. All house guests may dine in the elegantly restored castle dining room and enjoy the unparalled atmosphere of New Zealand’s only genuine castle. Superbly located on the Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle captures the romance and history of the past. Also on the property is a café, petanque pit and a gift shop for castle themed mementoes to take home.

Year of Celebration in 2017 On 3rd March 2017, Larnach Castle celebrated 50 years of ownership of the by the Barker family. A range of events have been held during the year to celebrate, the main event is a yearlong exhibition of the last 50 years of photographs and videos recording the “highs and lows” and the many achievements of this time. “We will also be hosting a Garden Debate on the 19th of October 2017 chaired by Tony Murrell – debate participants are four very well-known local garden experts ‘says Deborah Price, Marketing and PR Manager of Larnach Castle. Clyde’s Folklore Store

Clyde’s newest creative retail adventure is the Folklore Store which opened just before Christmas. The bespoke building exudes an atmosphere of relaxed informality while its architectural simplicity is the perfect backdrop for the inspirational gifts and goods inside. Owners Todd and Sarah Sisson are renowned international photographers and initially purchased land to build a gallery for their landscape photography business. But the opportunity to combine a store and gallery under one purpose-built roof was the ideal venture.

The result is a browser and buyer’s delight of fine arts and objects for your home and yourself! Items sourced “from within New Zealand and around the globe” are on display alongside the couple’s magnificent photography and an exclusive range of New Zealand made products that are also inspired by the unique landscape of Central Otago. The Folklore Store is located in the heart of Clyde and is open 10am-5pm daily. For further information and inspiration visit www.sisson.co.nz

Olivers in Clyde Established in 1869 by merchant Benjamin Naylor, Olivers in Clyde is one of Central Otago’s most significant historic landmarks with a Heritage NZ category one listing. Naylor saw financial opportunity in provisioning the many miners that flocked to the region’s goldfields and for over 100 years the buildings have continued to provide essential supplies and sustenance to locals and weary travellers alike. Today’s owners, David and Andrea Ritchie took over Olivers 8 years ago, meticulously and sympathetically restoring the buildings and re-launching its boutique accommodation. Eleven en suited rooms within the old stables and the original homestead blend the old with the new, creating a contemporary ambience integrally linked with bygone days. The final step in the refurbishment was the re-opening of the restaurant in 2015,

within the stone walls of the original Victoria Store. Fresh, clean flavours are the hallmark of cuisine at Olivers Restaurant, featuring superb local and seasonal produce and where a “level of uniqueness’’ is providing diners with a memorable experience. Also, established on site is the Victoria Store Brewery and Bar, while a new extension houses the Merchant of Clyde Café and Deli. The brewery offers a fine selection of craft beers on tap, while the café’s house-made goods cater for early morning customers starting the Otago Central Rail Trail and those wishing to relax during the day from the rush of the world, have a coffee and fresh local pastry in the courtyard! Enjoy an architectural, historic and gastronomic delight on your next visit to Clyde or, for more information visit www.olivers.co.nz

Paulina’s Restaurant

Located next to the local cinema in Clyde, Paulina’s Restaurant was opened in 2016 by owner and chef, Paulina Corvalan. Originally from Chile, but now resident in New Zealand since 2004, Paulina has introduced locals and visitors to Central Otago to her simple, uncomplicated food that is wholesome and delicious. “We use the plate as our platform to serve the kind of cuisine that brings unexpected delight” she says. As well as fine food, try the restaurant’s signature cocktail “Pisco Sour.” The South American cocktail is a mix of sweet and sharp taste with a texture that changes from “cloud like” foam to an icy tang. A “must try”! For further information visit www.paulinasrestaurant.co.nz

The Eade Gallery, located in Clyde’s Historic precinct, opened the doors to its new premises in June of this year. With Clyde fast becoming a destination point for visitors Melanie and Rex Eade felt it was time to provide a purposebuilt space in which to represent the many talented artists in the area. The gallery’s sole objective is to have a broad selection of regional art, encompassing all mediums. “It is important for us to try and cater for all tastes” says Melanie. “I am careful not to double up on styles, so that each artist is represented for their distinctive style. And if we can’t find an artist for a certain medium and style, we will source further afield.” With the benefit of having her own studio in the gallery, Melanie can work

on her paintings at any time. She says this creates interest as customers often come back to see her finished work or look her up on Facebook. Eade Gallery represents over 30 artists which include painters, jewellers, wood carvers, ceramicists, photographers and sculptors along with a range of reproduction prints and cards. Whilst the Eade Gallery is open 7 days from 10am work can be viewed and bought online via the gallery’s website www.eadegallery.co.nz Contact can be made anytime via the website or Eade Gallery Facebook page. 17A Holloway St Clyde email: melanie@eadegallery.co.nz Ph: 0212653358

Cromwell Heritage Precinct One of Central Otago’s best kept secrets, the Cromwell Heritage Precinct is tucked away on the shores of Lake Dunstan, at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha arms of the lake. From an idea in the mid eighties the historic village has been developed by volunteers over the years. Some buildings have been re-built from stone from the original buildings while others are a faithful re-creation built to modern building code. It is not only a delightful and free visitor attraction with historical displays and charming buildings, but also a hub for artists and craftspeople. The schist stone cottages and shops are tenanted by a quality-focused arts collective, international-standard printmaker, renowned goldsmith, highly original wire sculptor and a plant expert and maker of herbal creams and perfumes. There is also a charming

second-hand book store, unique gift outlets and two great cafes. The historic displays tell the story of the incredible 1860s gold rush when sparsely populated Central Otago was suddenly inundated with thousands of hopeful prospectors. Children love the talking ‘locals’ who tell the yarns, lifesize horses and secret alleyways, as well as the ducks, fishing wharf and picnic areas. Named in 2014 as one of New Zealand’s best ‘hidden gems’ by AA Directions Magazine, the precinct is gradually being discovered by overseas visitors, Kiwi families, makers of television commercials and locals. Located on Melmore Terrace, the Precinct hosts the Cromwell Farmers Market every Sunday from Labour Weekend to Easter.

OCTA Gallery Located within the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, OCTA provides a living gallery space to showcase limited edition original prints and an eclectic mix of works of art by recognised National and International artists. The gallery’s directors, Gail and Chris de Jong, moved to Central Otago after successful careers in secondary and tertiary art education. In opening the gallery they bring their own knowledge and enthusiasm to the venture. Gail continues her career as a painter and Chris, although now retired can be prevailed upon to run printmaking workshops on request! As part of the ever-changing display at OCTA you will find works by Chagall, Matisse, Braque, Antoni Tapies and others alongside well known New Zealand artists like Ralph Hotere, Pat Hanly, Marilynn Webb, Nigel Brown, Kathryn Madill, Olav Nielson, Michel

Tuffery, Kelvin Mann, Inge Doesburg, Jo Ogier, Jim Cooper, “Blue Black” and Suzanne Butson As well as selected prints, sculptures and ceramic pieces, you will also find unusual art objects and books of historical interest. Welcome to The Gate There’s no missing or mistaking Cromwell as anywhere but Cromwell. The only town in New Zealand boasting a 13 metre high ‘Big Fruit’ statue to symbolize horticulture’s economic importance to the Cromwell Basin which today is also heart of the burgeoning Central Otago wine industry. Just a hundred or so metres along State Highway 8B from the giant apricot, apple, pear and nectarine, Cromwell offers another compelling reason for stopping -- ‘The Gate’, a stand-out attraction for travellers and locals alike. A large, eye-catching building complex, The Gate Hospitality and Visitor Centre houses three independent hospitality outlets … Five Stags Bar & Restaurant (including Black Panther Pizza), Forage Information Centre & Café, Black Panther Pizza and Harvest Hotel. In the grounds at The Gate, which are landscaped to create a village green feel, is a standalone Conference and Events Centre and Super Liquor store. Five Stags has a traditional hunting

lodge theme but given a 21st Century twist. Forage Information Centre & Café is an exciting new concept to provide travellers the opportunity to not only take a coffee break but also get information and book attractions, activities in and around Central Otago as well as those in nearby Queenstown and further afield without having to tackle Queenstown’s traffic and parking issues. The Harvest Hotel offers 47 rooms available as standard and premium doubles, twins and triples. With French doors opening onto a balcony or paved patio, all suites afford stunning Central Otago views. The Harvest Hotel’s immediate neighbour is the Cromwell Golf Course, recognised as one of New Zealand’s best country courses, with the Wooing Tree Vineyard and tasting room directly across the road. The Wooing Tree Vineyard Wooing Tree is situated in the heart of Central Otago, New Zealand, next to the town of Cromwell and opposite the big fruit sculpture. The family owned single vineyard site specialises in Pinot Noir and also produces a Rosé, a still Blanc de Noir called “Blondie” and now a sweet wine called “Tickled Pink” from the same grape variety. Wooing Tree Chardonnay and Pinot Gris have also been added to the portfolio. The Wooing Tree label has had a remarkable first few years, 10 trophies, numerous gold medals, 5 star ratings, and praise from wine writers worldwide. Jointly owned by Steve and Thea Farquharson and Jane (Steve’s sister) and her husband Geoff Bews, they returned from overseas to run the vineyard, having setup the 18 hectare property in 2002. Steve had studied viticulture, wine making and the wine trade at Plumpton College in the UK, and Jane had also studied viticulture there. Nevertheless, owning and developing a vineyard was still a sharp learning curve. The Central Otago location gives a perfect mix of sub regional climates and optimum heat degree-days and the aim was to produce a pinot noir with rich and intense fruit flavours from low yielding vines. Fascinating Collection of Transport and Toys

A Brand Refresh for Summer

As Wanaka heads into another summer season promising bumper crowds and (hopefully) long, fine spells the town’s iconic tourist attraction, Puzzling World will be revealing their latest branding that, like the business itself is designed to engage and amuse. Shifting their work to a local designer, Simon Larkin of Larkin Designs, Puzzling World’s marketing manager Duncan Spear was keen to take some of the current messaging and mix it with a fresh approach. “Rather than a complete overhaul, I was keen to utilise parts of our current logo, copy and imagery and introduce new elements that spark imagination and a desire to explore a little further” he said.

With new uniforms, signage, brochures, vehicles and many more areas poised for a summer refresh, Simon describes the reasoning behind his latest creations,” The new branding was created to communicate more clearly the famous attractions name and image. As the ‘Tumbling Towers’ have become the iconic symbol of Puzzling World, instantly recognisable, prominent on site, and consistently used in previous branding, it makes sense to enhance and clarify this image to make an instantly recognisable brand element. With an increasingly international customer base it was important to ensure the name was clear, so it has been simplified and strengthened with a subtle ‘curve' effect

and strong font style to communicates the ‘fun’ and ‘World’ aspects of Puzzling World” The new marketing strategy includes characters to help convey the fun as Simon explains, “Using an internationally recognisable, and fun, family of ‘brain’ test dummies is to enhance the idea that Puzzling World appeals to all ages and ethnicities, and to tie together the diverse range of attractions. The ‘dummy’ family is a great way to draw in and add a humorous, personal connection for visitors, and represent a wide range of ethnicities and all age groups… 'are you a clever dummy?'

The Wanaka Transport and Toy Museum is one of the largest private collections in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 60,000 items on display. Acquired over many years by the late Gerald Rhodes via advertisements, auctions, markets and garage sales, the varied collection has something to interest everyone, whether adult or child. Described as a “pandora’s box of surprises” the transport exhibits include over 600 rare and unusual aircraft, cars, trucks, motorcycles, fire appliances, military vehicles, tractors and an extraordinary range of “automobilia.” Among the more unusual exhibits are some “must see” items including one of the world’s largest single-engine biplane and the world’s last original 1915 Sunbeam Rover ambulance. You can also see some of the vehicles from the new movie “Pete’s Dragon” and a 1924 Buick Limousine, only one of 4 ever built. Nostalgia rules in the Toy Collection where over 50,000 items feature clockwork toys, pedal cars, money boxes, battery-operated toys, teddies and dolls, including 500 Barbie dolls complete with accessories. Always popular is the Star Wars collection of toys, figures and memorabilia. Most exhibits are in remarkable working order and many are used for authentic film props and advertising. The museum and shop are open daily and you can also follow them on Facebook.

Spectacular Southern Scenic Route

One of the most spectacular roads in the South Island is the Southern Scenic Route between Te Anau and Dunedin around the Southland coast. Southland has a landscape of natural unspoilt beauty – the endless beaches pounded by the Pacific Ocean, rolling green fertile plains, meandering rivers and rugged mountains. The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is New Zealand’s newest multi day walking route, covering 53 kilometres over 3 days/2 nights. The track traverses coastline, marine terraces, podcarp and beech forest, as well as sub-alpine settings. The area is rich in history for both Maori and European cultures and the key attractions are the restored Percy Burn Viaduct and the Edwin, Sandhill and Francis Burn Viaducts.

Continuing your journey along the wild southern coast, enjoy the charm of fishing villages like Riverton, one of the earliest settlements in New Zealand. At nearby Invercargill, visitors appreciate its wide streets, Victorian and Edwardian buildings and superb parks and gardens. Art galleries show off the talents of Southlanders, while cafes and bars provide delectable cuisine and entertainment after the sun goes down. The distinctive pyramid shape of Southland Museum houses many artefacts but its most popular attraction are its tuataras. Leaving Invercargill, you will travel through some of the country’s lushest farmland, while some of the best

brown trout fishing in the world can be experienced on the Mataura River on the outskirts of Gore. Southland’s second largest town is also home to cultural heritage attractions including the Hokonui Moonshine Museum and Croydon Aircraft Company. Turning towards the Catlins coast, native bush meets the water’s edge, caves and waterfalls are hidden along deserted beaches and bays that are home to dolphins, sea lions and penguins. At Curio Bay visitors marvel at its 160 million year old petrified forest. Beyond the Catlins are the rolling hills of South Otago before passing Lake Waihola and Mosgiel en route to Dunedin, New Zealand’s most Scottish city.
