Well worth a visit is PLEASANT POINT just 19kms west of Timaru on SH 8. It is a small country town with a population of under 1300 and is the service centre for the surrounding farming district. One of the main attractions is the Award winning PLEASANT POINT MUSEUM & RAILWAY which has the reputation of being the best of it’s kind of operation in New Zealand. When the Fairlie Branch Railway Line closed in 1968, a group of enthusiasts established the Pleasant Point Railway and Historical Society based on “a vision, a rusty steam locomotive, a vandalized train station and no money!” Te Museum & Railway is run entirely by volunteers and has become one of South Canterbury’s premier attractions. The Museum boasts wonderfully restored STEAM LOCOMOTIVES and the world’s only operational MODEL T FORD RAILCAR. This unique vehicle holds only 11 passengers, looks more like a bus on rail wheels, and was built by the Museum’s volunteers from the NZ Railways original drawings and blueprints. On some weekends and public holidays, the locomotives pull historic carriages

along 2.5kms of track that was once part of the old 35mile branch line to Fairlie. The trains run to Keanes Crossing where there is an old time MOVIE THEATRE, PRINTING ROOM, MODEL RAILWAY, a collection of RAILWAY ROLLING STOCK & much more. Keanes Crossing has a meeting room with kitchen facilities making it ideal for special events and functions including wedding and family photos within the museum environs. Only a few kms away at Waitohi visitors can also visit the Richard Pearse Monument, which marks the spot where he became airborne. South Canterbury Museum Wonderful Local Heritage Explore the wonderful world of local heritage at South Canterbury Museum in Timaru. From fossils to fashions, there are hundreds of things to see. Waimate’s Tame Wallabies

While visiting Waimate, you must visit the town’s famous Tame Wallaby Park Sanctuary. Gwen, the “Wallaby Lady” has dedicated 40 years to hand raising and caring for orphan baby wallabies through to adulthood, mostly brought to her by hunters. This requires much commitment as they need constant warmth and food. Gwen loves them all as much today as she did when she got her first one all those years ago. As visitors meander among the tame wallabies at their own pace, hand feeding them special pellets, they are fascinated by the animals’ gentle nature, thus allowing you hassle-

The Waimate Museum is a complex of several buildings – seven of which are open to visitors. The main building is the magnificent Courthouse built in 1879. Inside, as well as temporary displays, you will find a clock room, military room, telephone display, photographs and much more. Visitors enjoy reliving their schooldays in the Douglas School and our younger visitors especially like to experience being locked in a jail cell in the old lock-

up. The story of how the people of Waihao lived in pre-European times is told through a video and a display of traditionally built shelters in the rammed- earth Lilian Marshall building. This building also houses the comprehensive moa display showcasing moa bones found at the local Kapua swamp. The geology display is also in this building and traces the Earth’s

history through rocks and examples of fossils from different geological eras. More recent human history can be seen in the tiny Bremner’s cottage from the horse drawn vehicles and Bushtown days of the late 1800’s and the recreated street of shops in the Pavilion. The Forrester Gallery The Forrester Gallery, North Otago Museum and Waitaki District Archive are key cultural destinations for the Waitaki District. The Forrester Gallery is housed in a spectacular 1884 neoclassical building designed by architect RA Lawson. A Cultural Facility Development Project ‘Shaping Our Story’ will create a new combined home for these facilities, by constructing a new building adjoining and upgraded the Gallery. The new facility will create a focal point for our art, for sharing our district’s unique stories and a community space where local residents and visitors will want to spend their time and engage in cultural activities. During the project the Museum and Archive will remain open to the public on weekdays from 1.00-4.30. The Forrester Gallery is open weekdays 10.30-4.30

and weekends and public holidays 1.00-4.30. The gallery will continue to present its art programme as well as developing new exhibits, events and programmes drawing from across the Museum and Archive collections with a special focus upon current research. Over Summer 2017-18 the gallery presents an art exhibition by local artist Peter Cleverley, Te Moa Waitaki and our Rogues Gallery exploring Victorian mugshots. The Museum temporary gallery space is open to the public with an exhibition featuring treasures from the collection including the important Willetts’ Collection of taoka from the Waitaki River mouth. OAMARU “VISIT THE STEAMPUNK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD”

Steampunk HQ, NZ’s premier Steampunk experience is a museum and workshop situated in the Victorian precinct of Oamaru. It is crazy, quirky and unique; unlike any other visitor attraction in NZ. Steampunk is a fun sub-genre of science fiction that features steam-powered technology, set in an alternate, futuristic version of 19th century Victorian England. Visitors this summer will have the opportunity to be fully immersed in the Steampunk HQ experience by entering the ‘NEW’ Transformatic Booth and reinventing themselves as time travelling airship pirates, adventurers and the like. Outside Steampunk HQ, Engine SP001 greets visitors by belching flames, smoke and eyrie sounds; whilst inside, a museum of two large darkened rooms presents a theme of a dark postapocalyptic vision of a future “as it might have been”. Contraptions and bizarre machinery featuring heavy use of copper, gears, pipes, gas cylinders, as well as an ensemble of skeletal sculptures are lit by flickering lights and accompanied

by film, projection and sounds. Belt out a tune on the Metagalactic Pipe Organ and marvel at Chris Meder’s Recycled Relics sculptures. A back door leads to a large yard with projects and machines in various stages of being steampunked. The Portal is a highlight of any visit to Steampunk HQ. Described as a time travel experience that moves visitors through into another dimension, The Portal is a retro-futuristic mirror and lighting installation that features original glowing light sculptures with a theme of skulls and mythology. Back on the road this summer, our Pedal Punk four wheel cycles are available to hire from outside Steampunk HQ. A wonderful way to experience the shops and galleries of Harbour Street, and the beautiful Oamaru Waterfront home of the Steampunk Playground and Little Blue Penguins. Victorian Heritage Celebrations

Spring brings the annual Victorian Heritage Celebrations to Oamaru and five days of all things Victorian. This year the celebrations embrace Crime and Punishment in Victorian times, with a range of entertainments to suit all ages, tastes and all means. From musical theatre with the acclaimed Pearl & Dagger Company, a refined upper class ball, a Mayoral Reception hosted by the honourable Mayor Kircher at Oamaru’s latest attraction, Whitestone City, to a sensational bare fist fight and a whole lot more. Bring yourself, and embrace the fun. Bring the whole family and spend a few days meandering through town and take in no-cost entertainments such as a garden party, the Grand Parade, the National Penny Farthing Championships, and street performances in the Victorian Precinct, before the finale of the Victorian Fete.

There is a Crime Writers Competition to enter before you arrive and lots of other things to do and see try and eat throughout the week. Dressing up is optional, but adds to your enjoyment. There’s plenty of choice for hiring part or a full costume from the Victorian Wardrobe in Oamaru. They will be open every day during the Celebrations from 10am – 4pm and have options for all comers. Oamaru’s long wooden station was designed by the New Zealand Railways architect George Troup who also designed Dunedin’s iconic station. Competed in 1900, the Oamaru Station was famous for its dining room which could seat up to 250 people when trains stopped there for lunch en route between Christchurch and Dunedin. OLVESTON HISTORIC HOME

A ‘must visit’ for lovers of arts and culture; Olveston offers a unique glimpse into the extraordinary lives of one of Dunedin prominent Edwardian families. Olveston was the home of businessman, collector and philanthropist David Theomin. Continuing the family tradition of philanthropy, Dorothy supported many of the artistic and community causes championed by her parents including Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the Plunket Society. Following Dorothy’s death in 1966, it was discovered that Olveston, complete with the original contents, was gifted to

the people of Dunedin. Visiting Olveston is by guided tour only; Guided tours reveal the extraordinary lives of the Theomin family and allow a glimpse of Dunedin’s rich business, artistic and social history from the mid1800s until the 1960s. Toitū Otago Settlers Museum is the perfect place for these sorts of days as children – and adults – can do any or all of these things in the beautifully restored and expanded buildings. Dunedin is home to Speight’s Brewery. Having recently been through a redevelopment, a visit to the Brewery will mean you get to experience the old and the new. The fully guided 90 minute tour lets you explore the historic working Brewery. Blue Penguins Pukekura Everyone loves penguins! Discover Korora, Little Blue Penguins, the world’s smallest penguins in their natural habitat on the picturesque Otago Peninsula and see them scurry home to their cliff side burrows at the end of the day. A purpose-built observation platform and boardwalk at the beach provide the most natural way to view the little penguins without disturbing them. Blue Penguins Pukekura is operated as a conservation kaitiakitanga partnership between the Royal Albatross Centre, the Otago Peninsula Trust and the Pukekura Trust. The increased financial support from visitors to the area has provided the penguin population with the chance to flourish thanks to the increased level of predator control and the construction of nest-boxes required to successfully raise their young free from harm. Penguin numbers have dramatically increased to over 200 breeding pairs thanks to the hard work of all of the stakeholders involved in the Blue Penguins Pukekura project. Tours begin every evening at dusk from the Royal Albatross Centre and last for approximately 75 minutes. There is a Café and Souvenir Shop on site. Happy Hens have become distinctive Dunedin icons since Yvonne Sutherland made her first appealing designs in 1984 and showcased them internationally at Dunedin’s sister city in Japan. Dunedin’s Spectacular Railway Journeys Taieri Gorge Railway is one of the world’s great train trips and an experience you should not miss. Operated by Dunedin Railways, this is a memorable experience that both adults and children will love. So step aboard and catapult yourself back in time to Otago’s pioneering days. The train departs from the fabulous Dunedin Railway station – rumoured to be the most photographed building in New Zealand and one you should explore before your adventure begins on board the train. Once on board you will travel through the Southern end of the city until you arrive at the junction of Wingatui where the train turns off and begins its meandering trip into the Taieri Gorge. This railway is part of the old Otago Central Railway which extended out as far as Cromwell and was built between the years 1879 and 1921 – it is steeped in history and is part of the tale told in an entertaining and informative commentary by the train manager. The train will stop or slow down at various scenic points along the way for photos where you can disembark and stretch your legs and enjoy the best of beauty, peace and quiet that nature has to offer. Stand on the open air platforms while the train moves or enjoy a quiet drink and food from the onboard cafe. The train runs daily to Pukerangi - a peaceful outcrop at the end of the Taieri Gorge. Twice a week in summer and once a week in winter the train extends its journey to the very end of the railway line which is now Middlemarch, a lovely example of a country railway town and the beginning of the Otago Central Rail

Dunedin Railways also operate the Seasider, an exciting trip which takes passengers on the spectacular section of coastal railway line between Dunedin and Oamaru and operates on frequent days throughout the summer season. Depending on the day, there are options to take a 90 minutes highlights tours or a longer seven hour trips to either Moeraki or Oamaru. Passengers experience excellent views as the train travels along Otago Harbour to climb the cliff tops to emerge from the bush and onto the picture perfect scenery of the Pacific Ocean and the incredible view over the dazzling Blue Skin Bay. This section of railway is considered to be a highlight of the rail network in New Zealand. Oamaru is a great option to take and this runs on a monthly weekly basis in the summer months. The train stops for one hour here for you to explore the historic precinct, check out the farmers market, have a bite to eat at one of the restaurants or cafes or visit the amazing Steam Punk museum. Moeraki is another exciting option where you can disembark, take a casual walk to the Moeraki Boulders Cafe and bar, have a bite to eat and a stroll to the beach to check out these near perfectly round natural boulders – strewn across the beach. This is a two hour stop over so plenty of time to eat and explore! Larnach Castle is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s finest historic homes. Not only is it a testament to the wealth of its builder, but to the current owners who have restored and revitalised it for the benefit of visitors from all over the world. William Larnach was a merchant, Baron and politician when he built the castle in 1871 for his wife Eliza. The finest materials were imported to befit the opulent grandeur he envisaged; Italian marble, Venetian glass and tiles from England. The 3000 square foot ballroom is still used for weddings and balls and the castle boasts the only Georgian hanging staircase in the Southern Hemisphere. Part of the romance and intrigue of the castle today is the tragic history of its owner. Larnach shot himself after a scandal involving his wife and the building was subsequently used as a mental hospital and later to billet troops. Years of neglect finally came to an end when the Barker family purchased it in 1967 and painstakingly restored and developed it to its present condition. As well as its magnificent Victorian interior, resplendent with architectural details, elaborate fittings and antique furniture, 35 acres of garden have been re-developed by Margaret Barker into “Garden of International Significance” status. The native plant trail is a beautifully illustrated walk through the castle grounds among rare and iconic native plants in rock gardens, a south seas garden and a rain forest. Children also enjoy a special guide to Larnach Castle. The illustrated brochure contains interesting facts about castles, Victorian times, the family’s history and a children’s tour of the grounds.

Scottishness is Alive and Well in Dunedin!

Olivers in Clyde Established in 1869 by merchant Benjamin Naylor, Olivers in Clyde is one of Central Otago’s most significant historic landmarks with a Heritage NZ category one listing. Naylor saw financial opportunity in provisioning the many miners that flocked to the region’s goldfields and for over 100 years the buildings have continued to provide essential supplies and sustenance to locals and weary travellers alike. Today’s owners, David and Andrea Ritchie took over Olivers 8 years ago, meticulously and sympathetically restoring the buildings and re-launching its boutique accommodation. The Eade Gallery, located in Clyde’s Historic precinct, opened the doors to its new premises in June of this year. With Clyde fast becoming a destination point for visitors Melanie and Rex Eade felt it was time to provide a purposebuilt space in which to represent the many talented artists in the area. The gallery’s sole objective is to have a broad selection of regional art, encompassing all mediums. “It is important for us to try and cater for all tastes” says Melanie. “I am careful not to double up on styles, so that each artist is represented for their distinctive style. And if we can’t find an artist for a certain medium and style, we will source further afield.” With the benefit of having her own studio in the gallery, Melanie can work

on her paintings at any time. She says this creates interest as customers often come back to see her finished work or look her up on Facebook. Cromwell Heritage Precinct One of Central Otago’s best kept secrets, the Cromwell Heritage Precinct is tucked away on the shores of Lake Dunstan, at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha arms of the lake. From an idea in the mid eighties the historic village has been developed by volunteers over the years. Some buildings have been re-built from stone from the original buildings while others are a faithful re-creation built to modern building code. The historic displays tell the story of the incredible 1860s gold rush when sparsely populated Central Otago was suddenly inundated with thousands of hopeful prospectors. Three Miners Vineyard Three Miners is a 19ha estate owned by Paul and Kirstin Wright in Central Otago, situated in Earnscleugh between Alexandra and Clyde. The Wooing Tree Vineyard Wooing Tree is situated in the heart of Central Otago, New Zealand, next to the town of Cromwell and opposite the big fruit sculpture. The family owned single vineyard site specialises in Pinot Noir and also produces a Rosé, a still Blanc de Noir called “Blondie” and now a sweet wine called “Tickled Pink” from the same grape variety. Wooing Tree Chardonnay and Pinot Gris have also been added to the portfolio. The Wooing Tree label has had a remarkable first few years, 10 trophies, numerous gold medals, 5 star ratings, and praise from wine writers worldwide. Jointly owned by Steve and Thea Farquharson and Jane (Steve’s sister) and her husband Geoff Bews, they returned from overseas to run the vineyard, having setup the 18 hectare property in 2002. Nevertheless, owning and developing a vineyard was still a sharp learning curve. A Brand Refresh for Summer

As Wanaka heads into another summer season promising bumper crowds and (hopefully) long, fine spells the town’s iconic tourist attraction, Puzzling World will be revealing their latest branding that, like the business itself is designed to engage and amuse. Shifting their work to a local designer, Simon Larkin of Larkin Designs, Puzzling World’s marketing manager Duncan Spear was keen to take some of the current messaging and mix it with a fresh approach. “Rather than a complete overhaul, I was keen to utilise parts of our current logo, copy and imagery and introduce new elements that spark imagination and a desire to explore a little further” he said.

With new uniforms, signage, brochures, vehicles and many more areas poised for a summer refresh, Simon describes the reasoning behind his latest creations,” The new branding was created to communicate more clearly the famous attractions name and image. As the ‘Tumbling Towers’ have become the iconic symbol of Puzzling World, instantly recognisable, prominent on site, and consistently used in previous branding, it makes sense to enhance and clarify this image to make an instantly recognisable brand element. With an increasingly international customer base it was important to ensure the name was clear, so it has been simplified and strengthened with a subtle ‘curve' effect

The Wanaka Transport and Toy Museum is one of the largest private collections in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 60,000 items on display. Acquired over many years by the late Gerald Rhodes via advertisements, auctions, markets and garage sales, the varied collection has something to interest everyone, whether adult or child. Described as a “pandora’s box of surprises” the transport exhibits include over 600 rare and unusual aircraft, cars, trucks, motorcycles, fire appliances, military vehicles, tractors and an extraordinary range of “automobilia.” Among the more unusual exhibits are some “must see” items including one of the world’s largest single-engine biplane and the world’s last original 1915 Sunbeam Rover ambulance. You can also see some of the vehicles from the new movie “Pete’s Dragon” and a 1924 Buick Limousine, only one of 4 ever built. Nostalgia rules in the Toy Collection where over 50,000 items feature clockwork toys, pedal cars, money boxes, battery-operated toys, teddies and dolls, including 500 Barbie dolls complete with accessories. Always popular is the Star Wars collection of toys, figures and memorabilia. Most exhibits are in remarkable working order and many are used for authentic film props and advertising. Spectacular Southern Scenic Route

One of the most spectacular roads in the South Island is the Southern Scenic Route between Te Anau and Dunedin around the Southland coast. Southland has a landscape of natural unspoilt beauty – the endless beaches pounded by the Pacific Ocean, rolling green fertile plains, meandering rivers and rugged mountains. The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is New Zealand’s newest multi day walking route, covering 53 kilometres over 3 days/2 nights. The track traverses coastline, marine terraces, podcarp and beech forest, as well as sub-alpine settings. The area is rich in history for both Maori and European cultures and the key attractions are the restored Percy Burn Viaduct and the Edwin, Sandhill and Francis Burn Viaducts.

At nearby Invercargill, visitors appreciate its wide streets, Victorian and Edwardian buildings and superb parks and gardens. Southland’s second largest town is also home to cultural heritage attractions including the Hokonui Moonshine Museum and Croydon Aircraft Company. Turning towards the Catlins coast, native bush meets the water’s edge, caves and waterfalls are hidden along deserted beaches and bays that are home to dolphins, sea lions and penguins. At Curio Bay visitors marvel at its 160 million year old petrified forest. Beyond the Catlins are the rolling hills of South Otago before passing Lake Waihola and Mosgiel en route to Dunedin, New Zealand’s most Scottish city.
